Copper coil (IUD)

I originally came to the Lowdown in 2021 for advice on contraception. I trusted the reviews, albeit some weren’t positive, and went for the copper IUD. It’s been the best decision I’ve made re contraception. It allows me to have safe sex with my partner, without artificial hormones. I’m back in touch with my cycle which really helps, and my periods are really manageable. I have 3/4 day periods, with some cramps but mostly manageable. Whilst the procedure to get the coil is unpleasant, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

Copper coil (IUD)

I used to get migraines and headaches before being on the coil so I would not say the coil was the reason I was getting them. The lower back pain came from the initial insertion, full disclosure that was painful. Overall it's great that you can just keep it in until you're ready to take it out and don't need to remember any thing, can just go about your day to day life. Downside it doesn't protect from STIs

Copper coil (IUD)

One of the best things I ever did. Insertion was a breeze, I barely even felt it. Had very mild cramps that evening but nothing that caused any real bother. I was nervous about my period as they have always been in the heavier/longer side but they are now shorter and lighter! Gone from 7 days to 4 with a day or so of spotting before. Felt a bit more cramping pain than normal the first period but none since then. I was on the mini pill before which turned me into an anxious, angry wreck with no sex drive. Now I feel like myself again. Only one minor downside is slightly more discharge for a couple of days a month just before ovulation. Love, love, love it
