The biggest change going from the pill to the copper coil for me is that period cramps became more painful and my period now lasts longer. However, after three months the pain settled down and now only occurs the first few days of my period, is less frequent and is easily controlled with paracetamol. The biggest advantage with this contraception is my boost in mood. No more mood swings, feeling low and my sex drive has improved. Great for anyone sensitive to hormones. I was worried about the insertion and nearly didn't go because of what others had told me but I had nothing to worry about. I was told to take paracetamol before the appointment, was given the anesthetic and was surprised by how quickly the process was. I asked the nurse, is that it? I wish I hadn't listened to others and got it done years ago.
Very positive mood

My periods are definitely a little longer but I’m regular as anything so am able to be very responsive to abnormal changes in my cycle. Definitely insertion is uncomfortable but worth it for me for a decade not having to think about pregnancy and no pain or feeling of it day to day. top tip: if you notice your cycles getting increasingly long then your coil might have slipped slightly! This happened to a friend of mine who went from 30-40days and was worried it was perimenopause!
Somewhat positive mood

I have used the copper coil for nearly 5 years and it hasn't caused any issues except for slightly heavier/more painful periods for the first 4-6 months after insertion. However, after using it for around 3 and a half years, it did fall out during one particularly heavy period (which I believe was brought on by stress). I had a new coil inserted on the same day and have since had no issues.
