The best contraception I have used. Insertion is no where near as bad as you think it will be in your head

I love the copper IUD - I was worried that coming off the pill, and having had depression episodes throughout my teens that my hormones might go a bit rogue when coming off a contraception which effectively keeps them fairly level. However, I can honestly say that going onto the copper IUD has made me feel so much better in myself - my skin feels good, my moods feel good, etc. I do get the odd period where I feel a bit more hormonal, but that's the nature of the beast of periods right?! Some fluctuations are normal. My periods are heavier with a little more cramping than on the combined pill, but not concerningly so, and I get no other side effects at all. I will say - getting it inserted does really hurt, and I have a mega good pain threshold usually. I was in pain for a week or two as my body adjusted (but this will depend on your cervix size, whether you get a 5 or 10 year coil as they are different sizes, and also on your own threshold), and then my periods and cramping were completely out of whack for about 4 months. But now I'm past the 6 month mark, my periods have been super regular and are now at a stage where any bleeding and cramps are manageable. I never feel the coil, my boyfriend can't feel the strings now they've softened, and I do really love it. I wanted a completely hormone free option as I was sick of relying on things with hormone in. But if you're worried you can get the hormonal IUD which still has LOADS less hormone in it than the pill.

I chose this as a non-hormonal method. GP surgery found it difficult to insert so I was referred to a hospital. For me it has been worth it despite increased heaviness in periods but it’s not unbearable - just change my menstrual cup more frequently. One day of great pain per month and some light pre menstrual cramps. Some spotting around ovulation which I’ve not had before. My cycle remained very regular. For me it has given me a higher sex drive compared to using condoms which I found to be a turn off and less enjoyable sex. My coil fell out after 15 months but it is testament to how much the pros outweigh the cons that I called up as soon as possible to get a new one.
