Copper coil (IUD)

Before having the copper coil, I’d tried all other forms of contraceptives. I got to a point where I felt, even though the copper coil would cause more heavier and painful periods, it was non hormonal so thought it was my old option (hormones really don’t suit me) The insertion was pretty bad I won’t lie but when it’s done it’s done! I never could feel my threads and my periods went from 5 days to 10 days. I went from being someone with light periods to unbelievably heavy; to the point I was wearing period knickers with two overlapped night pads for two of the days. The nurses said after 6 months my body would adjust and the bleeding would settle down. They started me on TXA as my ferretin and iron became low. To cut a long story short the bleeding never settled and I was still having ten day long periods. It was a horrible 12 months as I felt the majority of the time I was on a period and doing daily tasks or working proved very very hard some days. I became anaemic and would spend a lot of money on supplements alongside the prescribed iron. The anaemic led to a lower moon, zero sex drive, ravinous appetite and tiredness. I know they say research shows a small percentage gain weight on it and I was one of them. But they always like to say it’s others things like lifestyle. For me I was certain it was the coil due to the anaemia it causes. I’m 155cm and weigh 8 stone 3. I’ve always been that weight and I go to the gym 3-5 days a week, probably twice a week since the coil. I gained a stone in that year.

Copper coil (IUD)

I got the Kyleena coil fitted in Jan 2025 - just for reference I am a 5"3 23yr old without ever given birth - the insertion was very uncomfortable but not the worst ever, I did it with my sexual health clinic as I find they are more patient and kind rather than a quick GP / hosp appointment. My 11 months with the coil were overall great, except extreme contraction like pain and very occasional periods that would either last hours or a day. I didn't bleed every month but would get the odd few days of a period, quite unpredictable. I got a scan in July time just to make sure it was in the right place due to the amount of pain I was getting, and was all fine. In November 2025 I suddenly got excruciating pain and was told the coil has moved (perhaps explains the contraction pain throughout the year, I presume my body was rejecting it). Thankfully I pushed for another scan otherwise I would've kept having unprotected sex lol. Despite all the above, I am getting another one fitted because it is a trusty bit of contraception - just be aware if you experience a lot of pain in the lower tummy, to get it checked out!!

Copper coil (IUD)

I had the coil for 18 months, and while it offered some positives, it was overall a challenging experience for me. The insertion was unpleasant, and I was left feeling emotional for the rest of the day, which wasn’t something I was fully prepared for. I experienced unexpected heavy bleeding on random days outside my regular menstrual cycle for about three months. My periods, although they became regular, were very heavy and painful. Some months were more manageable than others, but overall, my periods were awful. I also had a constant feeling of pressure and a dull ache in my lower abdomen, which turned into sharper pain two weeks before my period. Additionally, I experienced some weight gain and bad acne. I was glad to be on a non-hormonal method of contraception, as it gave me a better understanding of my natural cycle. This ultimately helped me receive diagnoses for both PMDD and endometriosis, so the copper coil was helpful in that regard. However, during the last five months of using it, I developed persistent thrush. I have since switched back to the combined pill, as the side effects from the pill are less severe than those I experienced with the coil.
