The insertion itself was fine, uncomfortable but not painful. For the 6 months I had the IUD; I experienced cramping every day from ovulation till the end of my period every month. Also during this 6 months the IUD strings became very short as the IUD settled into my uterus, when they reached only a few mm long they caused me pain and discomfort to during sex. I had to be examined multiple times due to these issues, in a few consultations the clinician used a speculum too large for me causing me a lot of pain. Ultimately I had the IUD removed because it was causing too much pain, discomfort and frustration.

So far period have been very heavy and more painful than usual, but I’m hoping that this will begin to settle in the next few months. No breath through bleeding and causes no interruptions which is great.

While I was using the IUD, it was incredible because I had piece of mind and security. I wanted to use a non hormonal option and it did not affect me emotionally like the pill did. The process of getting it put in and out we’re uncomfortable but not painful. The anticipation was worse than the procedure. However after 8 years of using the copper coil (having changed it before the expiry date), I fell pregnant which was a massive shock and disappointment. It’s still unsure whether this was because of it being moved down or due to poor placement. After this, I am unsure what option to use next.
