Yasmin pill has an average rating of 3.0 out of 5 stars from a total of 225 reviews when used as a contraceptive. These are self-reported reviews where users of Yasmin pill review their satisfaction with this contraceptive and any side effects they feel they experienced whilst using.
Yasmin is a combined pill with a standard dose of oestrogen and a progestogen called drospirenone. It can be used to treat acne, mood problems, and some symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and some research has also linked it to increased sexual enjoyment. Compared with other combined pills, it has a slightly increased risk of blood clots and is also a more expensive birth control pill than other options like Microgynon and Rigevidon, therefore it's usually not prescribed as a first choice option.

Yasmin pill

Made the mistake of changing to the Progestogen-only/mini pill 'Desogestrel' August 2023. Caused me to be deeply depressed while on it, and I also experienced serious gastro-related episodes (twice) where I woke in the middle of the night and nearly fainted while on the toilet, with bad stomach aches then following for the next week or so. More relevant now, that pill also caused my skin to break out badly, the worse I'd ever had it (being a person before who had ever only experienced a few spots here and there). These spots were almost always appearing around my mouth around. Once I realised this pill was causing all of these symptoms, I came straight off and was advised to go back on a previous combined I'd been on for years. Depression and the gastro episodes cleared up, but the acne did not. I then experimented with coming off hormonal contraception altogether, hoping my skin would go back to normal. It did not, so I consulted the GP about a pill that was known for clearing up acne effectively. She put me on Yasmin, which I started 25/1/25. In the first month I did experience some feelings of nausea that I have heard people talk about, but that was only in the first few weeks on it. Also had one headache that went on for a couple of days, which is unusual for me, however I had also read that was common and I haven't experienced one since. Regarding my skin, it seemed to get a little worse for the first month, plus maybe a couple of weeks. I am now almost 2 months on this pill (having taken one 4 day break after my first pack, and now in the process of taking 3 packs consecutively) and I am hopeful that the frequency of spots is steadily going down. I also worked with ChatGPT (my very own virtual PA, haha) to create an oil-reducing skincare routine, so that might also be helping. Another positive is that my breasts have gotten larger, but no weight gain other than that! Will update again when I'm at 3 months on.

Yasmin pill

I was reluctantly put on the Yasmin pill by my GP as I wasn’t coping with previous contraception pills. I didn’t have a good experience with Yasmin. I was spotting very often and got regular nausea and headaches, so in total, was on it for about 2 months before I decided to come off of it

Yasmin pill

I tried Yasmin due to the positive reviews and experiences of friends. Unfortunately, it just goes to show how individual birth control can be, as I didn't get on well with it, unlike my friends. I went on it hoping it would clear my skin up, but sadly my skin got a lot worse- really nasty cystic acne on and around my chin/mouth. I also had extremely sore boobs the whole time- the point where I couldn't even lift my arms above my head and i had to wear a sports bra 24/7 due to the pain. It also made my IBS intolerable and it was just generally unpleasant experience. I wanted to share my experience as I'd heard such positive things about it, but it just wasn't for me. I'm now on the Evra Patch and I absolutely love it.

Yasmin pill

Initially, I had little to complain about with the pill. My skin became clear after a few months and my breasts increased a cup size. HOWEVER, I had always felt more ill and generally tired on this pill, emotionally I also felt very static. Not depressed or unhappy but I could not feel my emotions as normal. My doctor advised me to switch from a 7 day break every month to a 4 day break as the guidelines had changed. This increase in the pill caused my breasts to get even bigger and very very sore. My doctor found multiple cysts in both breasts, I explained that I thought this was due to the increase in the pill I was taking but they said they would drain the cysts rather than me coming off the pill. I decided to come off the pill to see if it would decrease the cysts and they went completely of their own accord within a month of coming off the pill. I lost a lot of hair and my skin got worse but I have never felt better in myself, more healthy and happy since coming off. I will not go on any form of hormonal contraception again.

Yasmin pill

I got prescribed the combination pill due to recurring endometrial polyps. I'm pretty happy with this pill, it took me 3 months to adapt to taking it with frequent mood swings, irritation and sore breasts in the beginning, but once I got past that I really saw the benefits. My hair had been progressively thinning for 3 years before I started this medication, let me confirm that as soon as I started taking this it went away like magic. My hair is thicker and my hairline is barely visible now, it's so much thicker and I'm thrilled. No pregnancies on this pill either so it does work. I do still have tender breasts from time to time and some light cramping but I still feel it's worth taking. 9/10 recommend.

Yasmin pill

I swapped to Yasmin after trying so many and I felt like I’d struck gold! My skin improved loads (but must also note was under a dermatologist as well) but my skin has continued to be really clear My mood is a lot better provided I run the packets back to back - do find my mood plummets whenever I have a 7 day break but only do this once every 3-6 months I do get headaches but unclear if it coincides with Yasmin but GP is requesting I stop due to this however I’m reluctant due to have good this pill has been!

Yasmin pill

This is the third pill I’ve tried and I’ve finally found one I want to stay on. I lost weight, my skin cleared up, my bra size has gone up in cup in 3 months, I’m much calmer on this pill I’m someone who is neurodivergent which causes me lots of anxiety and this pill has made me a lot more optimistic and relaxed. Only been on it 3 months if anything changes I’ll update!

Yasmin pill FAQs

You can buy the Yasmin contraceptive pill today from the Lowdown. The process is easy to do. Order a prescription of 3,6, or 12 months. Follow the ‘order now’ button and fill in the details requested. We need to know your medical history and some details about you before we can send this out to you (don’t worry- this is only to assess that the pill is right for you). Our pharmacy will then review your request and dispatch the pill to your door. It even comes in discreet packaging.

Due to a potential increased risk of blood clots while taking Yasmin, it is important that we ask you some questions about you and your family history before we deliver Yasmin. This is to check that it is the right contraceptive method for you. If you’re concerned about the risk of blood clots and the pill , read more in our guide.

We will need the following information before you order from us: Your age/date of birth, your weight/height, your blood pressure, any medical problems you may suffer from, your regular medications, and our family history

You can buy Yasmin online directly from the Lowdown from £29 for 3-months supply (including delivery).

The answer is both! You can set up a prescription so that you never run out of your pill.. You have the option to subscribe which will mean that every 3,6,or 12 months (depends on what you choose), your Yasmin pill will be sent out to you. Our team are on-hand to help you should you have any questions. We can even help match you with your ideal contraceptive method with our contraception recommender tool, or you can speak with a women’s health doctor 1:1 .

Like Lucette, Yasmin is a new generation birth control pill that's often used to treat acne. Our data shows that more women see an improvement in their skin whilst taking Yasmin than those who don't. Make sure to check out our user-generated reviews to see how our community report Yasmin affects their complexion. Find out more in our guide to the contraceptive pill and acne.

There's no clear evidence that using a combined pill like Yasmin causes weight gain. However the hormones oestrogen and progestogen in the combined pill can have an effect on how your body stores fat, retains water and even your appetite. More research is needed to provide a definitive answer. Make sure to take a look at our users' reviews above to see how our community reports taking Yasmin impacts on their weight. You can also take a look at our guide to contraception and weight to find out more.

Many women take Yasmin to help with common symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) including acne, excess hair or hair loss, and irregular periods. Find out more in our guide to contraception and PCOS.

There is conflicting evidence over whether contraceptive pills cause mood swings. Some evidence suggests that the Yasmin birth control pill may have an impact on depression, but others say that it doesn't so we can't give a definitive answer. Most women report no mood changes with their contraception. Some women report an improvement in mood changes or mood swings throughout their cycle such as those associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). We suggest taking a look at the user-generated reviews and check out our guide to guide to contraception and mood.

There is very little research to answer this. The oestrogen found in Yasmin may make hair thicker and fuller, however some progestogens in the combined pill may cause hair loss. The progestogen in Yasmin is anti-androgenic so theoretically should have less of an effect on hair, however, science hasn’t caught up with our theory yet. For more details, read our blog which asks can the contraceptive pill cause hair loss

Yasmin is a combined pill that is taken daily to prevent pregnancy. It makes the fluid in your cervix thicker (which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb) whilst also stopping ovulation (release of an egg each month). Yasmin also prevents the lining of your womb from thickening enough for a fertilised egg to implant into it. There are a few things that can stop the combined pill from working properly including vomiting, some antibiotics, or missing a pill. Take a look at our complete guide to the combined pill to find out more. You can also use our Missed pill calculator to help you understand what to do if you miss a pill.

You should take your Yasmin pill around the same time every day. We recommend keeping your pill packet somewhere you look at everyday (like by your toothbrush) to remind you to take it, or set an alarm on your phone. Yasmin is designed to be taken for 21 days followed by a 7 day break during which you'll experience a withdrawal bleed (like a period). If you want to, you can choose to shorten this break or miss it out altogether (check out our blog on taking your pill back to back). Depending on where you are in your cycle when you start the pill, you might not be protected against pregnancy straight away. Check out our blog on everything you need to know about the combined pill for more info. Coming off Yasmin is easy - you just stop taking it. When you do, you’re no longer protected from pregnancy. If you want to stop the pill but do not wish to become pregnant then you should complete your current packet before stopping and consider switching to another form of contraception before you stop taking your pill. If you have unprotected sex and stop your pill before the packet is finished you may ovulate (release an egg from the ovary) and could become pregnant. You can use our [Missed pill calculator]. Read our complete guide to coming off the birth control pill for more advice.

Yasmin birth control is safe to take. There are however some small risks associated with taking the pill. With any combined type of hormonal contraception that contains oestrogen, there is a slightly increased risk of developing blood clots in your veins and arteries. The combined pill may also increase your blood pressure. Your healthcare professional will check your individual risk before prescribing the pill. Use of the combined pill is also associated with small increased risks of breast cancer and cervical cancer. The risks of cancer with contraception are complex but reduce with time after stopping. It's also important to remember that the combined pills do not protect you from STIs.
