I only had the copper coil fitted 6 days ago. At the appointment I was shown how to feel for the strings and how the insertion was going to go and although I know they need to tell you that I would have rather not known about hoe they insert it! I can’t lie the insertion hurt but the doctor was amazing making sure I tried to stay calm and offered me local anaesthetic, I think everyone is different I went with my friend the other day to get hers and she didn’t bat an eyelid so don’t let that put you off! I had quite severe cramps on the first day felt like sharp pains and painful period cramps. Since then I have had a dull aching pain, bloating and spotting that lasted 4-5 days the spotting has only just stopped but the dull pains and bloating remain. The dull pain and bloating has me worried however, I will try and ride it out in hopes it is just “settling in”. Overall, if this works it is 5 years covered without a worry and it will be totally worth it. I would recommend going with someone and them driving you to the appointment so you can find a more comfortable position to sit in on the way home after the fitting as I found sitting up straight quite unbearable the first day. It is still early days for me and compared to the mini pill it is already better as it has no hormones which made me depressed, gave me mood swings and made me gain weight. Just the dull pain and bloating which I hope will sort itself out in time.

I love the copper IUD - I was worried that coming off the pill, and having had depression episodes throughout my teens that my hormones might go a bit rogue when coming off a contraception which effectively keeps them fairly level. However, I can honestly say that going onto the copper IUD has made me feel so much better in myself - my skin feels good, my moods feel good, etc. I do get the odd period where I feel a bit more hormonal, but that's the nature of the beast of periods right?! Some fluctuations are normal. My periods are heavier with a little more cramping than on the combined pill, but not concerningly so, and I get no other side effects at all. I will say - getting it inserted does really hurt, and I have a mega good pain threshold usually. I was in pain for a week or two as my body adjusted (but this will depend on your cervix size, whether you get a 5 or 10 year coil as they are different sizes, and also on your own threshold), and then my periods and cramping were completely out of whack for about 4 months. But now I'm past the 6 month mark, my periods have been super regular and are now at a stage where any bleeding and cramps are manageable. I never feel the coil, my boyfriend can't feel the strings now they've softened, and I do really love it. I wanted a completely hormone free option as I was sick of relying on things with hormone in. But if you're worried you can get the hormonal IUD which still has LOADS less hormone in it than the pill.

I had this coil for just over 6 months until I couldn’t cope with it any longer . First of all the insertion was a bizarre pain which I can’t describe but it made me scream. I had a few mild cramps after for the rest of the day and some light spotting but this settled however this made my periods SO much more painful and heavy . My period before the coil would usually last about 3 days it would be heavy and i would get some cramps but this coil made me bleed for around 8 days each time, so heavy that I would be changing pads every hour or less and the cramps would be unbearable, I would get shooting pains, stabbing pains, back pains. They were so bad I was unable to leave the house or even work because the pain would be so strong I couldn’t focus . Painkillers did nothing either . I got terrible ovulation pain too to the point where I couldn’t walk around without having to sit down all the time, I would also have spotting around this time too. My moods were definitely different on the coil too, I got very snappy, angry and anxious, I don’t know if this is down to the coil or just the pain I was constantly in. I probably only got about 1 week a month where I would feel fairly normal on this. I really wanted this to work out for me so kept thinking to myself I’ll give it another month to see if it gets better but it just really didn’t suit me. I had it removed this today and I already feel happier. I felt like there was a weird like of pressure/slight pain that was always there and that has gone now . I’m now unsure what to do as this has put me off trying any other coils and I don’t like taking hormones .
