My insertion was surprisingly a good experience, great communication, pain relief and local anaesthetic provided as standard. I didn't have any concerns during the insertion, however I experienced cervical shock about 15mins after ... not nice but supported very well by the team. Since then I have had inital breakthrough bleeding, lower back pain and cramps for about a week after the appt. My first period since was heavier and lasted 6days instead of my standard 4 days, I was also early by 3 days. Apart from that some spottinghas remained. I suffer with migraines and saw an increase in the amount from the insertion, since then its gone back to normal. Overall I am excited to see how it goes, hormonal contraception doesn't agree with me so not an option.

Pros - none hormonal, the placement doesn’t cause me discomfort, I can forget about it & for 3 years hasn’t caused me any concern on unwanted pregnancies. Cons - the doctor I had to insert the coil was amazing, and it was no more discomfort than a smear, however the 2-3 days following I was in a lot of pain. It did settle. I suffered with BV 2/3 times whilst my body became used to the coil in my body. Vaginal dryness is the biggest thing for me which I’ve never exp before and lastly longer heavier periods. The heavy side has taken 2 years to settle down, the random cramps and spotting has settled and less frequent and my period lasts longer. Not completely ideal for me but currently the pros of protection and being non hormonal it’s the best option for me.

I used to get migraines and headaches before being on the coil so I would not say the coil was the reason I was getting them. The lower back pain came from the initial insertion, full disclosure that was painful. Overall it's great that you can just keep it in until you're ready to take it out and don't need to remember any thing, can just go about your day to day life. Downside it doesn't protect from STIs
