I bled for 6 months after the very painful insertion. My period then stopped for 5 months, and I was bleeding heavily for the last 3 months. However, I did not gain weight, get acne or have any changes to my mood. Shame about the bleeding because it would've been perfect!

I have extremely painful periods, but also suffer from headaches, so I am very limited to the type of contraceptive pill I can use. After being on Cerazette for about 10 years, I realised that it was affecting my mood very negatively and also had stopped preventing my period from happening so was advised to try the Mirena Coil. I was reluctant to have a foreign body inside me, but the reviews and positives of the Mirena Coil seemed to be worth it. The insertion was probably one of the worst experiences I have had to-date in a medical sense, I took some ibuprofen but absolutely nothing would prepare someone for the odd and unpleasant feeling of the coil being inserted. Ultimately, if the coil works for you, it IS worth the short-term pain, but please don't be misinformed by some on here that it's a pain-free easy process. It's such a bizarre feeling like someone is touching your insides! Since having the coil fitted in August, I have almost constantly been bleeding (very lightly) on and off for most days. My sex drive has almost entirely disappeared, and when having sex, I am often completely dry - not something I have EVER experienced problems with before. I have constant niggling pains that come and go, like a period pain but slightly different. Sometimes they're not enough to bother taking painkillers for, so I just sort of 'deal with it'. My mood has been in a constant state of PMS style despair/anger/panic - how I would be if I was about to start my period for a day or two. It's so unpleasant and I honestly don't know what to do. My skin has also been absolutely HORRENDOUS since having the coil fitted, so bad that I'm at the stage some days where I don't want to leave the house. I'm 31 years old, and I don't expect to have skin like a teenager. It was so awful having the coil fitted, I don't want to go and have it removed. I also have no idea what my alternatives are, because Cerazette didn't work for me, I absolutely cannot stand using condoms, and whatever I do, I will have to go through another stage of having messed up hormones when I change to something else! Being a woman is such a pain - literally!
