I have been on the pill since I was 14 (now 35), i didn’t suffer from problematic periods, I wanted it for contraception only. I got put on the mini pill from combined three years ago (roughly). I didn’t want to go on the mini pill but was given no other options, I was told it was this or nothing.

So I have very mixed feelings about the mini pill! I was on it for 4 years without noticing any side effects. But about two years ago, I started getting recurrent thrush and severe ovulation cramps with irregular bleeding. I did a lot of tests to figure out why I suddenly kept on getting thrush and it turns out that the mini pill caused me to have vaginal atrophy which is a factor for recurring infections. After being prescribed oestrogen cream to compensate the side effects, I decided to stop hormonal contraception for the time being.

I have mixed feelings about the mini pill. I started taking it in 2018 after trying a combined pill and at first I was over the moon. My periods had stopped, it didn’t cause the mood swings that the combined pill did etc. But now I’ve been on it for 4 years I am being affected by my low mood, loss of sex drive and breakthrough bleeding with severe cramps and breast tenderness. I’m looking to move away from hormonal contraceptives all together but this was probably one of the best of a bad bunch.
