I have PCOS and Adenomyosis which has made my period very heavy, painful, terrible mood swings. I also suffered from anemia as a result. I have tried for years to fight it naturally. I have had several polyps removed, but they always come back. I have previously been fitted a Mirena coil via NHS but the side effects were unbearable, I felt sucidal, in the end I had to pull it out myself, as the GP insisted I had to give it three months. I had my last polyp removal done privately, and the doctor suggested that I might respond better to a Kyleena coil because of the smaller dose of hormones. In the first 4 weeks I felt a bit off, weird headache on one side of my head, but that has now gone away completely, and I have to say, I will never go without a coil until I become a man :) My periods are totally manageable now, there is a bit of pain and spotting but I'd say there is a 90% reduction in these symptoms. I can actually get on with my life, do things and not feel totally out of control. I used to think there was something fundamentally wrong with me, but now I don't get these crazy mood swings, I feel more in control of my body and my life. I really hope this review can help someone out there.

Not having periods is really handy. I think my mood is a little lower but its better than when i was on Merina Coil. I definitely think my sex drive is lower but i also have three kids running around so it may not be just the coil!

I enjoyed the convenience of the coil, not having to worry about a heavy period (and sometimes no period at all) and not having to worry about taking a pill each morning, which was just extra difficult when travelling through different time zones for work. However, the coil caused me excruciating pain every 2 weeks (I assume this was during ovulation and again when I'd have my period) with a lingering pain on other days of the mouth that left me feeling nauseous most days. After multiple doctors appointments, external and internal scans and a biopsy I decided to have the coil removed. I pain was going almost instantly.

I have had my Kyleena for 6 months now and I am very happy with it. Prior to this I was on the pill for 8 years. Insertion was painful, but it was over quickly. I experienced period-like cramping for the rest of that day and the following day, but was able to manage this with pain killers and a hot water bottle. Following that I had the occasional cramp for the next few weeks. Early on I did find that I was breaking out around the time of my period, but that seems to have settled down now. My periods were also a bit irregular at first but have settled down after the first 3 months and are predictable now. I have also found that my periods are lighter than when I was on the pill which is great. Overall, I am very happy with my experience. Any negative side effects have been minor and stopped after the first few months. Well worth it for the ease and security in my opinion!

Used this for the lower hormones as the pill was affecting my mood. Experiences differ but I have had a great one, went straight back to work after insertion. I have very light 4 day periods and no other side effects through the month - although this did take about a year to settle down. I did have an issue with new reoccurring thrush - which my GP agreed was due to the coil. Rather than getting it removed I was given enough medication to manage anytime that it might flare up. Will stay on this as my method of contraception as for me it has been the best one.

I’ve had the kyleena coil for 4 years now! When it was first put in I experienced quite a bit of cramping, and random cramps for the first 3 months with spotting. (I would highly recommend asking for pain relief during insertion) But all of this was manageable (found exercise and sex to really help with the pain ironically) - especially because I felt almost immediate mental relief from stopping the pill, which had made me quite depressed without me realising. At first I did get period cramps around my period, but over the last 3 years those have gradually gone away, and left me with super light 4 day periods, no cramps and pretty much no other symptoms either. One thing I did struggle with was recurrent thrush, but this began before I got the coil, and so I don’t think it was the cause, but definitely didn’t help either.

I decided to get the coil in Feb 2022, I was nervous about the pain as I have a low pain tolerance but in the end the fitting was bearable and not as bad as I thought it would be - I experienced strong cramp-like pains whilst it was fitted. I might consider getting a numbing injection next time as I know this is an option in some surgeries. I was then told I would have cramps for a few weeks after the fitting, but I had severe cramps every single day for almost 3 months. In the end, I went to my GP about the pain, and was prescribed Buscopan and Naproxen to help. She also booked me in for an ultrasound scan to check the coil was in the right place. The pain meds helped a little, but eventually through sheer willingness to power on and see if things settled, the cramps slowly got better and started to only occur during my period. My period has never gone away but has got lighter which is a nice bonus. I had been using a menstrual cup before and was told not to use this in case it suctioned the coil out of place which was disappointing, so have had to change to a Nixit menstrual disk which has been fine. In September, I had the ultrasound scan and was told the arms of the coil were slightly protruding into my myometrium by the sonographer, but she reassured me it was probably ok. Alarmingly, the next day my GP texted me to say the coil needed to be 'urgently' removed as it was embedded....fast forward to May 2023 and my 'urgent' NHS appointment for March has been cancelled and rearranged so many times that I decided to go private. My second ultrasound in June showed that the tips of the coil are still slightly embedded and possibly deeper into the wall. I am now having an MRI scan arranged to be sure. Overall, despite this 14 month saga and the horrendous initial cramps, I have enjoyed being on the coil as it's meant I don't have to worry about remembering when to take contraception and it hasn't had many side effects on me. I was on the combined pill before, and feel nowhere near as anxious as I did on that. I have heard more positive experiences from friends about the coil than negative ones.

The hormonal coil is the best contraception that I have used and helps me feel empowered over the decisions that I make about my own reproductive system. My fitting didn't quite go to plan, but it wasn't at the fault of the kind doctor and nurse who fitted it. I had an adverse reaction to the procedure where my blood pressure dropped significantly. Apparently this is a known side effect to the process and can cause some women to need the coil removed. After about an hour, my blood pressures went back to normal. I found that the hormone level in the Kyleena coil was better for me as the pill was made my mental health worse. My periods are very light and manageable and happen around every 8 weeks. My cramps for the first year of the coil were really bad and would cause me to double over and have to spend days in bed. However I am pleased that I stuck with it because that stopped eventually and now the pain is manageable with over the counter pain killers.

I have had the kyleena coil for just over a year and really like it. The insertion was absolutely fine with painkillers and I was very bloated but not in any pain after insertion. My periods returned (I was on the combined pill before this) after three months and are much lighter than before. My skin initially was quite bad but has cleared up now and my hair did start to shed but stopped after five months. My skin is perhaps a little greasier than before and I’ve got slightly darker body hair but otherwise no bad side effects really.
