Expert care is worth your investment
What a fantastic service. After struggling with my health for several years having someone listen to you and advocate for you is so refreshing! Would highly recommend this organisation.
Best service going! So easy to use, very prompt with replies and is just a great way to look into anything to do with female health! Very few services like it which is what makes it so great.
I pretty much won't go anywhere else for contraception or advice now. I've been using/following The Lowdown since not long after they started and recommend it to everyone all the time.
So glad I finally booked an appointment with the Lowdown, the Dr really listened to my concerns and talked me through the different options for treatment. Really great to talk to a Dr who is familiar with PCOS!

Too many women spend years being told their symptoms are normal. I want every woman to leave their consultation feeling heard, taken seriously and, most importantly, with a plan that will make her feel better and fits around her life.

I've spent my career answering the questions women are too often dismissed for asking. We have the time to listen and give honest, evidence-based answers that take into account the whole person, not just a single symptom.

How we can help
What happens at my first consultation?
You will receive an email invite with a link to join a 45-minute online consultation with a clinician specialising in women's hormonal health. You can join using any device. They will ask about your health history and symptoms, listen intently, explain your options and leave you with a clear treatment plan. This may include a prescription, if appropriate.
You need to be aged over 18 years old and the consultation has to be for yourself and not someone else.
You will need to show your passport or driver's licence to prove your identity during the consultation. You may also need to share your GP's name and surgery address and consent to share notes with your NHS GP if a prescription is issued. Make sure you have this ready and with you for your appointment.
Do I need a referral or diagnosis to book?
No. You can book a consultation if you have a diagnosis, a suspected diagnosis, symptoms, or questions. That's what we're here to help you with.
How does the consultation work?
We will email you a link to join your consultation. It is a video consultation and you will see your clinician online. You can use any device and it helps to choose a quiet place where you can speak confidentially.
Do I need to do anything before my consultation?
Make sure you have your passport or driver's licence with you to prove your identity during the consultation. You may also need to share your GP's name and address so make sure you have the information with you. It can help to write down your questions in advance to make the most of your time with the clinician.
Are you a regulated clinic?
The Lowdown is a Vira Health company. Vira Health is fully CQC-registered, the same regulatory body that oversees NHS and private healthcare providers across England. This means our clinicians, processes and patient records meet the same standards of safety and quality as any registered medical clinic.
Can you help me with weight gain?
Yes. We believe in assessing your full hormonal health as weight gain can have multiple hormonal causes, including polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause, thyroid imbalance and medication side effects. Our clinicians will assess what's driving your weight gain as part of a health evaluation.
Will I be prescribed medication during my consultation?
Our clinicians do not lead with medication and start your consultation with a thorough assessment of what's driving your symptoms.
If a prescription is right for you following your consultation, we will send it to our regulated pharmacy partner who will deliver it directly to your door. You pay our pharmacy partner for any prescribed medication. Medications prescribed privately do not have standardised costs like the NHS. Prices vary depending on what is prescribed.
How much does prescribed medication cost?
Your initial online consultation costs £159 (this excludes prescription and medication costs). Your consultation price includes a free 20-minute follow-up appointment.
Talk to our clinicians during your consultation to learn more about your treatment options. You pay our pharmacy partner a £10 private prescription charge and for any prescribed medications. Our pharmacy partner sets the medication pricing and costs are shown before checkout.
Medications prescribed privately do not have standardised costs like the NHS, and prices vary depending on what is prescribed.
Can you help with perimenopause symptoms?
Our clinicians are highly experienced in managing and treating perimenopause and menopause. They will ask you questions about your symptoms and health history during your consultation to recommend the best management plan for you.
We are here to listen and give you our full attention during your consultation.
Can you help with hormonal health conditions such as PCOS?
Our clinicians specialise in women's health and take polycystic ovary syndrome, also known as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, seriously. They will ask you about your symptoms and health history during your consultation and can help you understand more about the condition. They will recommend the best management plan for you.
What if the medication doesn't manage my symptoms or I have side effects?
If your treatment isn't working as expected or you experience side effects, let us know at your follow-up appointment so we can review how you are doing and if your symptoms are under control.
If your side effects feel severe, are getting worse, or if something doesn't feel right, don't wait for an appointment with The Lowdown Clinic. Contact NHS 111 or your GP for urgent advice, or call 999 in an emergency.
How do I cancel or reschedule my consultation?
To cancel or reschedule, contact our care team at hello@thelowdown.com.
You can cancel or reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours before your consultation at no charge. Cancellations made within 24 hours of your appointment may not be eligible for a refund.
What if my GP has already prescribed something, can you take over my care?
The Lowdown is a Vira Health company. Vira Health services do not replace your GP and the service they provide for your general health queries and support.
We will send a clinical letter to your GP if you are prescribed weight loss medication. It is important your doctor updates your healthcare records about any new prescriptions, as it may affect other medications or medical conditions.
If you have any other questions, please contact our care team at hello@thelowdown.com.
The Lowdown Clinic does not provide an emergency service. If you are experiencing severe side effects or if something doesn't feel right, don't wait for an appointment with The Lowdown Clinic. Contact NHS 111 or your GP for urgent advice, or call 999 in an emergency.
