I had to switch from my combined pill due to risk of breast cancer and stroke. I loved my previous pill but this one I've had such negative experiences, so anxious and depressed and angry, as well as random bleeding and making my work and home life difficult to cope with. I will not be taking this pill beyond the 3 months prescribed

Only been on this for 2 months to may make an updated review after longer time. But I was on the Evra patch for about 2 years, I loved it until the end as I got very teary all the time, had no sex drive and when I went on holiday the patch kept sweating off. My skin was always fine on contraception though and didn’t notice any weight gain. With cerelle for the 1st month I had a period as normal, my 2nd month I’ve had no period. I still have a low sex drive (which I had on the patch too) so maybe it’s an outside factor, haven’t noticed any major weight gain, skin is still fine. I’m still teary but I guess I’m just a depressed gal rather than contraception affecting me. Haven’t noticed any change to my boobs. On the patch I was very dry all the time which made sex not fun, on Cerelle I feel like I have more discharge which isn’t too much of a bad thing.

Initially I really enjoyed having no period at all. I then noticed I was having regular weekly mood swings becoming irritable, angry and emotional for no reason. My breasts also got bigger and I struggle with large breasts anyway which I struggled with a lot.

I went on this pill because I get migraines with aura, so can’t have the combined pill any more after being on Microgynon for years and having no major issues. I had some headaches to start with on this pill while I got used to it. Cerazette was okay, it stopped my period for the most part (got a v light period with intense cramps every 4 months or so), and it didn’t affect my sex drive. However my boobs hurt every month and periodically, despite not getting a period. My nipples literally felt like razors!! And the vaginal dryness was not fun. I’ve been lucky that I’ve never had bad skin but it was really greasy when I started Cerazette and I noticed more hormonal spots around my chin that wouldn’t ever really go. I definitely feel like I was bloated a lot more and noticed some weight gain but this could have been down to my lifestyle at the time - was going out and not always looking after myself in terms of what I ate and drank. I’ve always suffered from brain fog (thanks ADHD and depression), so it’s hard to say if Cerazette also had an affect on this, but I definitely had mood swings for the first few months of being on this pill. The highs were high and the lows were low for 3-4 months.

Tried this help with pre menstrual mood. I tried to stick with it because my doctor said that it make take a while to settle/get used to. It did help make me more chilled, but the irregular bleeding / spotting and headaches meant the benefits didn't outweigh enough for me to continue to use it.

First contraceptive pill I have tried in years. It made me have really bad thoughts and made me feel really depressed so had to come off it. If you live with mental health symptoms, please be weary of this potential side effect.

I was worried about side effects going on to Hana but had zero side effects apart from breast tenderness for the the first two weeks, and a regular period (although slightly lighter and shorter than normal) in week 3. I started seeing some spotting in week 5, I'm in week 7 now and on day 16 of continuous bleeding. It's reasonably light but inconvenient. No PMS symptoms other than the breast tenderness, which started in week 1/2 and is the same as the breast tenderness I got with PMS. I'm going to stick with it for now but if the breast tenderness and continuous bleeding hasn't stopped after 3 months I may give up on it as it's pretty inconvenient.

I have been put on the progestogen-only pill recently after 10 years on the combined pill, because none of my doctors ever bothered asking if I suffer from migraines before :) I have been on it for just over a month and I have not enjoyed it. I feel really, really tired (which is a side effect that is listed as 'uncommon' on the leaflet), not feeling like myself at all and have had some digestive problems with ups and downs of constipation/diarrhoea which I did not suffer from before going on this pill. I also found this pill more of a faff compared to the combined pill, as you have to take it every day at the same time. I normally take it at 9AM but that means that if I am going anywhere early in the morning, I have to take the packet with me. Although mine has a 12-hour window in which it can be taken and it still provides cover, I prefer to stick to the same time for safety. I also do not enjoy the fact that there is no 'guaranteed' bleeding to know that I am not pregnant, and that bleeding can happen at any point, randomly. That does not work with my lifestyle and it made me truly miss my previous combined pill which didn't need too much adjusting to my life. I have not had other major side effects (but then again, I have been on a pill for 10 years), but I have decided that this doesn't suit my lifestyle and I will stop taking it soon. I have invested in a Ladycomp device (99.3% accuracy, same as the pill but without hormones!) and once I finish this packet of pills I will be stopping all hormonal contraception. It's a shame that, for someone who definitely does not want a pregnancy, there aren't many options available but I am glad I found Ladycomp which has the same accuracy as the pill without taking hormones. I hope the Lowdown will start talking about it on their platform soon!! :)

Zelleta pill (Progestogen-only / Mini pill)

The first five months of taking it after switching from the combined pill were amazing, I had no period and felt mentally very well. Then in the 5th month I started lightly bleeding and it hasn't stopped for over 3 months now, affecting my mental health, libido and general health of my vagina. I got thrush more and I started being drier and having pain whilst having sex. I'm not sure if it was user error since I never skipped a pill and the latest I'd ever been to taking it was 3 hours. Notable difference: The first 5 months were on Cerazette, not Zellete, however considering the active ingredient in the pill is the same I'm not sure that's what caused the difference.

Since changing to zelleta, every emotion I have is severely heightened and, for me, the highs are definitely not worth the lows. I also have a lower sex drive and I spot a bit.

Overall, I’m really enjoying using this contraception at the moment. I’ve noticed my skin has cleared up and my breasts have gotten bigger, as well as me losing weight. I will just note that I did have one extra long period right at the beginning of taking this contraception that lasted two weeks, but my doctor said all of it was normal and my blood work and pressure seemed fine, so keep that in mind if you take this. Since then, I haven’t had another period, but I’ve always been irregular so cannot put that down to the pill.

It started off well 3 weeks no bleeding then a light period for a week, mood was more mellow and just abit lower, no sex drive at all. Started second pack and had a week no bleeding at beginning and 3 weeks non stop bleeding to the point I just finished my lst pill and I’m giving up. I currently have another migraine and bleeding is getting heavier again I have no sex drive my mood is mellow in a way I’m just so frustrated about the bleeding it just making me feel gross so my mood is getting worse by the day . I think all mini pills are like this with me I tried another one three years ago and had similar side effects. Definately not for me. If I didn’t get the headaches still and had less bleeding maybe I’ll stick with it but maybe some women are just not meant for this synthetic hormone pill.

I deeply appreciate the ease it took for me to get this medication. The pharmacist helped me understand what I was getting, and the pharmacist was so kind and helping ease my fears. She actually recommended that I go to my GP if I want to remain on this medication because the GP can prescribe it for free. The side effects were horrific and got worse the longer I was on them. I got halfway through my second pack before I genuinely couldn't do it anymore. I was sweating so much I was having to shower three times a day, my tummy was hard and distended. My anxiety got so bad I couldn't bring myself to even open my curtains and I couldn't even self-soothe. I was writing on a whiteboard and my head felt it was about to explode. Multiple times it felt like my eyes were coming up from my socket (this side effect is not written on any slip and I believe it is described as having difficulty putting contact lenses in, I don't wear contact lenses but my eyes fell out they were coming out) I thought after I finished my first month things would get easier, They didn't The side effects just got worse and worse and worse. To the point I was considering calling for an ambulance because I had a severe migraine with an aura that lasted for 3 days (I have not experienced one since stopping Hana) Just because Hana doesn't work for you don't write off all birth control. After some trial and error I have found something that works for me. I am sad that Hana caused me so much grief because it fitted in so well with my lifestyle, being able to walk into any pharmacy and getting it over the counter.

‘Your service is outstanding’

Great service. The process is straightforward and even if you don't know what you want/need there's a handy questionnaire available and if further support is needed there is the option to book an appointment with a clinician. Prices are fair and depend on the brand and length of subscription. Also the process of cancelling the subscription is very straightforward and transparent. Thanks.

🎉😍 Quickest delivery ever and so easy to use. I won’t go into detail but let’s just say I was bloody delighted to not have to go into the intimate detail of my sex life with my GP to get the actual pill I know works for me rather than the generic version they keep trying to push!

I saw your online prescription service and placed my first order this weekend. I love the convenience and want to support a business which has taught me something new about a pill I’ve been taking for 15 years! Knowledge is power and The Lowdown are empowering people to make more informed choices than previously possible.

Your service is outstanding and I have a great experience using your website, such an amazing idea that will be changing the lives of so many women. Thank you and I’ll definitely be recommending your business to everyone I know!!!!!!

Just placed my order for Levest and I wanted to thank you for making life so much easier! Working full time and being a lone parent can take over so thank you, thank you for creating such a fantastic, easy and fast service! You have really helped with the anxiety of securing contraception.

Ana

I think this is the type of company the UK has needed for a long time. Making contraception easy and seamless to get is a huge advancement on what we’ve had before. I currently live in the UAE where you can buy contraception over the counter and have always been shocked by how easy it was here in comparison to the UK.

Kelly

via Instagram

Time, efficiency and discretion are the three factors why I purchase my contraceptives online - especially during the pandemic when it was almost impossible to book GP appointments.

Christy

via Email

I wanted to say thank you for creating an easy to use platform for contraception. I have been on the pill on and off for almost 20 years and have had so many issues getting the one that works for me, dealing with Dr's who spoke to my husband (as if I wasn't in the room) about how I might be better on an implant, trying to get the coil and being told it just won't fit etc.

Anna

via WhatsApp

I order with yourselves because I felt like my opinions and queries were not being heard by my doctors surgery, when I found out about The Lowdown and that it was a service passionate about finding the right contraceptives for the individual, speaking to doctor fran I finally felt heard and my feelings validated, so I'd rather pay for your services from a company that actually cares than go back to my doctors surgery where I didn't feel heard.
