Levosert reviews

The Levosert and other hormonal coils are a favourite on The Lowdown as contraception, and can also be brilliant for perimenopause and menopause. Not only can Levosert be used as the progesterone part of your HRT for up to 5 years, but it also acts on contraception until the age of 55 AND can treat the heavy bleeding sometimes associated with perimenopause (although it doesn't have a licence for this). The Levosert releases a low level of progesterone each day meaning it has few and generally well tolerated side effects. Some people worry about the fitting and removal procedure, but we've got advice on how to get the best pain relief here .

Continuous HRT is where you take the same dose of both oestrogen and progesterone every day. It is used when your periods have stopped or when you have used cyclical HRT for more than 1 year. The aim of continuous HRT is to prevent bleeding.
Progesterone only
If you have a uterus and are using oestrogen HRT then you will need to take a form of progesterone to protect the womb lining (endometrium) from overgrowing as this can increase the risk of endometrial cancer. This progesterone is called endometrial protection.
