ScreenMe vaginal health swab test reviews

ScreenMe is an innovative test of your vaginal microbiome. The vaginal microbiome is your unique composition of healthy “good” bacteria which help to keep the vagina’s environment stable and at an acidic pH. If there is an imbalance of “good” and “bad” bacteria this is called dysbiosis. More and more scientific research suggests that vaginal dysbiosis is implicated in many women’s health issues. Imbalance in your bacteria can not only cause infections like thrush and BV, but also has a role in fertility, pregnancy, menopause and even has the development of cervical cancer. ScreenMe is the only UK-based test that can screen for every single bacteria or yeast within your vaginal microbiome. Following a test, ScreenMe offers follow up support with 1:1 consultations to explain the results and support you with lifestyle changes to improve your vaginal microbiome in the future.

ScreenMe vaginal health swab test FAQs

At The Lowdown we are all for taking control of your own health. Vaginal symptoms can be distressing and if conventional medical tests can’t give you an answer - testing for dysbiosis using ScreenMe can be the next step. We have had countless appointments with users about recurrent thrush and BV, which are connected to the vaginal microbiome. We know that contraceptives, especially the coils and perimenopause can affect your discharge and vaginal microbiome, so the ScreenMe Vaginal Health Clinic is an excellent partner for our community.

ScreenMe tests are delivered in a discrete packaging box which includes instructions to take your vaginal swab and a return container. The vaginal swabs are simple to do by yourself. Your sample undergoes Next Generation Sequencing of ALL the bacterial DNA found within your vaginal microbiome with 99.9% accuracy. Reports are generated and reviewed by PhD scientists and specialists and you will be offered a consultation with an intimate health practitioner to talk you through your results, discuss your concerns and make a treatment plan.

The bacterial test is recommended for unexplained infertility, miscarriage, IVF, infections including BV, thrush and STIs and vaginal symptoms such as dryness and painful sex. The yeast test is a good choice for recurrent thrush or itchiness. But you can also choose to test both at the same time!

Don't worry! Although the result reports are made so that they are easy to understand, alongside your test results, you can book a free consultation with a trained intimate health practitioner who can discuss your test results in the context of your symptoms and concerns.

Vaginal dysbiosis can be treated in different ways depending on the findings. Some people may only require lifestyle changes such as with nutrition, hygiene practices and supplements. Occasionally, some people may require antibiotics, which the Lowdown medical team may be able to help with.

ScreenMe tests use NGS technology which means unlike other tests where a predefined panel of bacteria are tested ScreenMe screens for ALL bacteria present at the time you take your swab at 99.99% accuracy. This is hundreds of thousands of bacteria. If it's there it is picked up and reported.

Yes, within the UK all kits include a prepaid, tracked, return envelope.

The consultation is free and there are no hidden costs.

ScreenMe's service is entirely online and can be done from the privacy of your own home. Tests are sent in discreet packaging, and the simple, at-home swab is very easy to do. Results and consultations are all done virtually, so you do not need to go to any clinic.

NGS technology is gold standard. This means that ScreenMe is able to screen for 100% of bacteria present with 99.9% accuracy. This makes NGS much more accurate, efficient and comprehensive than other methods. Also, by screening 100% of bacteria, NGS is able to tell you the relative amounts of each bacteria species present - this can determine how dominant a species is in your microbiome (& therefore what this means for your vaginal health). Methods such as PCR and swab culture are unable to do this, as they just tell you whether some species of bacteria are present or not.

The vaginal microbiome has implications in many women’s health conditions. You can read more on the ScreenMe website.
