Vagifem is a vaginal pessary that contains oestrogen which is only used locally inside the vagina. Each dose comes with a disposable applicator to help with insertion. It is used every night at first, for 2 to 4 weeks, then the dose reduces slowly to twice weekly. Vaginal oestrogen is very safe, with studies showing it is only absorbed into the body for a very short time at the start of use, in fact, an entire year's supply of vaginal oestrogen is equivalent to just 1 oral oestrogen HRT tablet. The leaflet contained in the packet of vaginal oestrogen is the same leaflet used in oral and patch oestrogen and does not fully apply to vaginal use. Large studies have shown there is no increased risk of cancer when using vaginal oestrogen. Women who have had breast cancer may also use vaginal oestrogen, but only after a discussion with their oncology specialist.

I have increased my dose over a 3 year period and have found that sweet spot where I now feel the best I’ve ever felt. I accept this new version of myself and feel empowered to start to live my life again. It hasn’t been easy or straight forward, but with the right information, help and support, I have a good combination of HRT, magnesium glycinate, vit D and magnesium spray to help manage my symptoms. More people need to talk 🙂

I've had a very positive experience on HRT and it's really helped me during peri menopause. My anxiety, brain fog and night sweats are much relieved. I'm able to function in my work much better. I'd especially recommend vaginal HRT - it was a revelation nd made me feel so much more comfortable.

Overall I’m happy being on HRT as it helps with, flushes, anxiety and improves sleep The downsides I have experienced are a change in my skin for the worse, weight gain and hair loss Testogel helps with energy and sex drive The Vagifem helps with urine urgency I stopped using Tibolone due to bloating and weight gain I also experienced swelling to my lips and dermatitis around my mouth when using progesterone products

Originally started HRT 3 years ago was started on Everol 25mcg patch then after 6 months later increased to 50mcg. All was going well then after 7 months I developed unscheduled bleeding and a return of symptoms, more anxiety not sleeping aches and pains. Was referred for a scan had biopsies all clear changed to oestrogel 3 pumps then increased to 4 pumps. Took about 3-4 months for symptoms to settle. Commenced Utrogestan 200mg continuous

I've been on the menopause journey for 5 plus years now, i was placed on evorel sequi for the first 3 years and that was fantastic , recently was changed to continuous HRT patches however the gp made a mistake he gave me conti and a evorel 50 patches which made me feel terrible but also he gave me the wrong thing has evorel 50 is to high with conti, i saw this mistake myself so have removed evorel patch and letting conti patch do it's job ..i am bleeding but hopefully settle soon now I've seen what the problem was . More education is required for women I've had to do all the hard work myself and it can be really frightening when you don't understand.

Perimenopause crept up on me, I hadn't linked the symptoms I was getting to hormonal changes. In hindsight I'd noticed changes 2/3years ago. I wasn't getting full on hot flushes, which was all I associated with menopause. Instead, I was getting painful, stiff joints - some days I felt like I was 100 not 45! Although I still haven't had a proper hot flush, I have had some night sweats and generally run hotter these days. I'd had a Mirena fitted after the birth of my last child age 31, so i didnt get periods for many years. I tried having it taken out, but heavy periods returned and I had another fitted. So, I still dont get periods and therefore couldn't track hormone changes via periods. I also noticed my sleep worsening, suddenly needed to get up to wee every night and then struggled with insomnia. I noticed reduced energy levels, which didn't improve even when I did manage to sleep and exercise. Added to this was vaginal dryness, recurring thrush and vulval discomfort/irritation. Then came mood issues - I noticed increasing irritability that was out of character and irrational. What finally made me join the dots was low mood, tearfulness and generally feeling a lack of enthusiasm for life. This led me to have a conversation with my GP. She was very understanding and agreed with my suggestion that the symptoms were likely perimenopausal. She was happy to prescribe oestrogen, but did caution that I could probably only have it safely for 10years,which I don't think is true. I went back a few months later as felt my vaginal dryness and irritation hadn't improved, she prescribed vaginal estrogen cream. I have had some improvement, but this is still an issue, as is low libido, so think at my next review I will ask for testosterone. I've also recently noticed a reoccurrence of the joint pain, and other symptoms, so might need my other HRT reviewing too.

My experience with HRT has been mostly positive. Because they found endo when they performed my hysterectomy I was advised to take progesterone. I tried utrogestran and another one but they didn’t suit me and I felt really emotional all the time. I’ve stopped all progesterone and feel better in myself. I was experiencing some pain where my womb used to be so I’m now trialling vaginal oestrogen. It seems to be working.
