Ovestin or Estriol 0.1% cream contains oestrogen which is only used locally and can be used both internally inside the vagina and outside on the vulva. It comes with an applicator to help with insertion. It is used every night at first, for 2 to 4 weeks, then the dose reduces slowly to twice weekly. Vaginal oestrogen is very safe, with studies showing it is only absorbed into the body for a very short time at the start of use, in fact, an entire year's supply of vaginal oestrogen is equivalent to just 1 oral oestrogen HRT tablet. The leaflet contained in the packet of vaginal oestrogen is the same leaflet used in oral and patch oestrogen and does not fully apply to vaginal use. Large studies have shown there is no increased risk of cancer when using vaginal oestrogen. Women who have had breast cancer may also use vaginal oestrogen, but only after a discussion with their oncology specialist.

Prior to starting HRT in October 2024, I was really struggling with anxiety, depression, my moods were up and down I “despised “my husband and older children and would lose my patience alot faster than I should which wasn’t normal for me and for no reason gained a lot of weight literally over night, I had no energy and being very active with twins boys born in 2016 and my employment being very physical (trying to stay fit at the gym nothing i did worked) and really bad hormonal acne, very dry skin my moisturiser i had used for years wasn’t enough along with hair loss, aching joints and high blood pressure in general just struggling with everything physically and mentally. I resigned from my nursing job of 15 years due to my low mood and as I couldn’t function (brain fog and anxiety) properly and severely depressed and suicidal I took a year off working hoping that no longer working night shift would improve my sleep pattern and mental and physical health which it didn’t. I was constantly at the drs with all these symptoms for about 3 years had affected my mental health and blaming working night shift for 10 years was the reason and had affected me especially the insomnia and poor sleep patterns couldn’t sleep at night but would get sleepy during the day at around 3pm i was exhausted and would crash out and sleep for 3-4 hours. I was prescribed blood pressure medication (went to hospital numerous times with chest pains thinking I was having a heart attack from anxiety because I thought i was dying was told that it was stress and/or anxiety given great advice for weight loss(even though i was already exercising and eating healthy doing fitness challenges) took pain relief everyday for aching joints, tested for cushing disease and thyroid all came back negative, sadly never did the dr consider it could be perimenopause(maybe because i was in my mid to late 30s when this all was happening) so i started researching as I was concerned about my well being and why nothing was helping I came across perimenopausal symptoms which I had majority of them and ticked most of the boxes, thankfully my dr agreed and I started HRT. After starting HRT Estradot 0.25mg (i’m still currently taking this dose) at the beginning there was a bit of nausea, head aches and boob tenderness which wasn’t to bad, after about 3 weeks everything calmed and I gradually began to notice a difference in my moods I felt more positive and relaxed, no more anti depressants and anxiety medication, my energy and endurance improved, no aching joints and sore shoulder, after 3 months my sleep improved after 6 months physically noticed my exercise was starting to pay off and felt my muscle tone improving my acne improved and no longer needed antibiotics (had been taking antibiotics for 3 years daily for hormonal acne) I only get acne around when my period is due which is normal, skin feels hydrated and not itching all over, less hair loss hair feels like it has more volume and life my periods are regular and not every 2 weeks and flooding my pad, less brain fog and NO hot flushes! I have recently started on Oestrogen pessaries (6 weeks ago) for vaginal dryness which wasn’t an issue when first starting HRT until lately which has improved and feel more comfortable in my vaginal area when having intercourse. I feel that HRT has improved my life immensely and i feel like myself again and my family are alot happier too.

I have increased my dose over a 3 year period and have found that sweet spot where I now feel the best I’ve ever felt. I accept this new version of myself and feel empowered to start to live my life again. It hasn’t been easy or straight forward, but with the right information, help and support, I have a good combination of HRT, magnesium glycinate, vit D and magnesium spray to help manage my symptoms. More people need to talk 🙂

Due to being a poor absorber I have changed brand patch a few times and also had to increase dose to 175 over time. Still not right. My blood levels are only 181nm the vaginal dryness and loss of sex drive is since having the Merina fitted. Never suffered before that.

I have changed from a tablet every day for 12 days then a break of 16 days to a tablet each day continuously. I have also upped my patches to 75mg due to know 50 or 100 patches available in NZ currently. This change in above has been for the last week, so I am hoping to see some changes

I had a hysterectomy in November (endometriosis and adenomyosis) but my ovaries were left. Almost immediately, I had symptoms of perimenopause - boiling at night, sore boobs, horrible anxiety (filled with dread that something awful was about to happen), zero libido, dizzy spells, incontinence… I spoke to a private gp who specialised in women’s health. She explained that sometimes ovary failure happens after a hysterectomy and put me on hrt. I felt like I wanted to cry when I spoke to her - she explained everything so well and I honestly started feeling better within days of taking HRT. I’m still feeling strangely anxious about things but exercise is helping. Progesterone helps me feel sleepy at night which a bonus with the insomnia I usually have.

I found that utrogestan and oestrogel together weren't stopping the INCREDIBLY heavy (on occasion debilitatingly so), long periods and bleeding. After trying different doses, in the end the mirena coil was fitted and stopped the bleeding, improved other symptoms and made me wish someone had suggested it earlier.

I was initially on gel, which I didn’t absorb well. Patches have worked much better for me and this regime has eradicated or improved all of my symptoms

Overall positive experience. Have within the last 3 months increased to 3 pumps (2 morning, 1 evening) due to joint/muscular discomfort and yet to see if this improves things. I suffer with VA and 1%estriol cream has been a lifesaver, paired with vaginal moisturiser. I constantly felt like I needed to wee and suffer from vaginal dryness and vagifem was no longer effective. I do get bloated and I have gained weight but don’t know if that’s related to hrt or just the way my body balance has changed. I am working on nutrition and cut down on processed foods.
