Oestrogel is a really popular form of HRT. It is a clear and colourless gel which is rubbed into your inner thigh or outer arm. 1 pump should be applied to each body area, for example, use each thigh and each arm for 4 pumps. It takes about 5 minutes to dry before you put your clothes on. Oestrogel needs to be used with a progesterone if you have a uterus. It has the advantage of being easy to titrate the dose up and down when advised by your healthcare professional.

Method

Continuous HRT is where you take the same dose of both oestrogen and progesterone every day. It is used when your periods have stopped or when you have used cyclical HRT for more than 1 year. The aim of continuous HRT is to prevent bleeding.
Cyclical HRT is where you take breaks from the progesterone part of HRT, usually each month. You will usually have a withdrawal bleed around the time the progesterone has stopped. Some methods of HRT have this break built in already.
Oestrogen is the main component of HRT. If you have a uterus and are using oestrogen HRT then you will need to take a form of progesterone to protect the womb lining (endometrium) from overgrowing, as this can increase the risk of endometrial cancer.

I am 54 and towards end of perimenopause, my only way of knowing this is because I have had 2 periods in the last year. Around 47-50 I had symptoms of joint pain and severe depression, which I now realise was peri menopause( at the time GP treated individually) at 50 immediate insomnia, period every other month, hot sweats, low mood and started HRT oedtrogel pump X3 and utrogestan, I took it for 18 months, sweats stopped but low mood continued - I had no happy high even with oedtrogel increase, continued with period pain, severe itchy dry vulva and insomnia. decided that solving only 1 symptom didn't warrant staying on the HRT. I came off easily and flushes stayed away. over the span of year and a half , over span of year and half I went back to GP to focus on trying to manage severe vulva dryness and itching, change in labia shape and colour changes with no joy. I tried different topical estrogen vaginal creams, both increased a noticeable aggressive mood change. Then I gave up and found various alternatives for itchy vulva which intermittently help but still have to manage. now at 54 , hot flushes have come back during the night and new shock of finding sex painful so Google suggests vaginal atrophy- ooh happy days. It seems a continual quest just to feel okay is relentless. Currently thinking HRT again for osteoporosis but only when periods are clear of a year, the thought of a coil with vaginal atrophy makes me feel sick. In the meantime what does seem to work are supplements recommended by nutritionist for mood and mental calmness and sleep. I will ask GP to try different vaginal oesteigen to help vaginal atrophy. I will ride the hot flushes out. For the most part of my mid life has been managing symptoms.

Perimenopause crept up on me and with onset of depression and weight gain with Mirena I felt older than my years. I thought my 40s would be my years after bringing up young children and the awful symptoms of Perimenopause came as a shock. I'm so pleased I went to GP and requested HRT (oestrogel). After a few weeks my skin looks radiant, my mood is sunnier and I'm beginning to get my health back. Don't suffer with debilitating Perimenopause symptoms. There's a snake oil industry of tonics and tablets which can dazzle women and not all of these are evidence based. Consider HRT its effective with positive health effects.

Was doing well on HRT however when my mood felt flat I upped my dose of estrogel and had bad vertigo. This could have been completely unreleased however I panicked and came off HRT. Then had an avalanche of peri symptoms so am considering going back on it with a lower dose. The worst symptoms without the hrt are the anxiety, brain fog, broken sleep, mood wings and more recently migraines. Never suffered with headaches before.

The oestrogen was great. But I can not cope with any progesterone, I couldn't in contraceptives and sadly I can't in HRT. It causes very, very low mood to suicidal thoughts and a rash that becomes full body. And so I have had to come off the oestrogen as I am not allowed it on its own due to a risk of cervical cancer.

I have increased my dose over a 3 year period and have found that sweet spot where I now feel the best I’ve ever felt. I accept this new version of myself and feel empowered to start to live my life again. It hasn’t been easy or straight forward, but with the right information, help and support, I have a good combination of HRT, magnesium glycinate, vit D and magnesium spray to help manage my symptoms. More people need to talk 🙂

I’ve been on HRT now for 1 year. Still have a few of the same symptoms but it is improving gradually just taking a little longer. I am in the process of speaking with my doctor about changing to a different form of HRT , and as I am having problems with joint pain, I will be seeking advice for this also as this may be worsening due to the medication.

Overall positive. I could never get the patches to stick so wasn’t absorbing. Switched to gel & much prefer it. For me the constant hot flushes, night sweats with anxiety attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts, self harming & uncontrollable rage has all stopped with HRT. The problem with HRT for me is the constant post meno bleeding & migraine attacks. To be fair, the migraine attacks started at age 51 before I started HRT.
