Oestrogen patches are a great way to deliver oestrogen through the skin, which is safer than taking an oral tablet as there is no increased risk of blood clots. Patches comes in several strengths meaning it's easy to titrate the dose up and down. Patches are worn on fatty, hair free skin below the waist like the bum or thighs. They're convenient if you're forgetful as only need to be changed twice a week, but remember to put them on a different bit of skin each time. Estradot 37.5 patches are clear so suitable for all skin tones and are the smallest patches available.

Method

Continuous HRT is where you take the same dose of both oestrogen and progesterone every day. It is used when your periods have stopped or when you have used cyclical HRT for more than 1 year. The aim of continuous HRT is to prevent bleeding.
Cyclical HRT is where you take breaks from the progesterone part of HRT, usually each month. You will usually have a withdrawal bleed around the time the progesterone has stopped. Some methods of HRT have this break built in already.
Oestrogen is the main component of HRT. If you have a uterus and are using oestrogen HRT then you will need to take a form of progesterone to protect the womb lining (endometrium) from overgrowing, as this can increase the risk of endometrial cancer.

I'm definitely less psychotic coming up to the start of my period. I have a reduction in moodiness and irrational reactions. I've suffered with depression for a number of years. This is the same.

Hrt has completely changed my ability to live. I was at my whits end (not realising why) with my inability to do life! All i could do was sleep, i was attending a sleep clinic it was so bad. I had zero motivation and lost all of my confidence. I'm only 42 and out of work due to severe burn out and other mental health conditions. I'm now starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel, I'm almost off antidepressants and can actually get through the day getting stuff done and not always needing a 2-4hr long nap to recover! We tried increasing my dose to help with my recent onset of Adenomyosis symptoms during my period (severely painful, heavy & clotted) but this affected my mental improvements without much change in the period symptoms so i reduced again. I have been given an alternative treatment option of taking Cerrazette (progesterone only contraceptive) instead which will completely stop my periods but I've never been keen on taking contraception and Id like to keep track and know when I'm post menopausal, so unsure about that yet.
