Initially I didn't notice any negative side effects other than irregular periods and spotting. However, as time went on I noticed an increase in weight which was unexplained (I was training for a half marathon and regularly going to the gym but my weight was still creeping on). I also experienced mood swings, anxiety and low mood. I also lost my sex drive completely, all of which effected my relationship. After getting the implant removed I immediately felt a lot better, and decided to give my body a break from hormonal intervention.

My first one was fine (no side effects), my second one I have a whole list of side effects, so even if you think it's fine be aware your body reacts differently each time you get a new one

In the beginning it was really good, stopped my periods and was great to have something in and forget about it. However, what started as a breakthrough bleed ended up being 6 months on my period. My mood was also impacted I was always either crying or angry. One of the worst ones I ever tried

I'm currently on my third implant (just back to back use) but it's finally got to a point where it needs to be removed. I had quite a bit of low mood on my first one, and then a lot of breakthrough/constant bleeding that was treated with an additional microgynon pill daily. My second round was absolutely fine, aside from the occasional arm soreness. Unfortunately this third time just hasn't worked out for me at all - I've been bleeding nearly constantly since March (so about 4 months) and I'm now consistently tired and drained. Would recommend for anyone who doesn't want to have to take a daily pill but it's just not worth it for me anymore!

Didn’t get pregnant. Blood sugar issues were extreme, frequent hypos. Bled every day for a year until I was given the progesterone only pill to take alongside it.

The only positive is that my periods stopped for the first 2 years with both implants. And the 99% protection against pregnancy, but my sex drive was on none existent. So the 99% pregnancy also works because you don’t want sex lol. I would go through phases of increases sensitivity emotionally, anxiety levels where very high and I’m not usually an anxious person. But then times of the opposite where I almost was like a robot and had no emotions… Period pain was minimal.

Came off the pill and got the implant as I wasn't good at remembering to take the pill everyday. Biggest issue with the implant was the irregular bleeds that felt nearly constant and being really emotional all the time.

Irregular periods became unbearable, most lasting as long as a month.

Constant bleeding for first 6 months, then highly irregular periods, decreased sex drive at first and now completely gone. No other major side effects that I noticed and no pregnancy. Have been trying to get it removed and will not be going back.

Just coming up to the three years on the implant. Very quick and relatively painless procedure to insert. The first year and a half I did feel quite flat, had a loss of sex drive and vaginal dryness, however all these side effects did improve somewhat as time went on. I have tried the injection, various combined pills (had to stop due to constant migraines) and the pop pill and this is the only I would recommend. As far as hormonal contraception goes it was mild and mellow for me.

Don’t keep it on the DL.Put it on the LD.
