The Depo-Provera birth control shot contains a high dose of progestin that stays in the body for 3 months after the shot is given by a healthcare professional. It is really great at stopping periods after a few injections. The downside is that once it's given, it's in for 3 months and cannot be removed or stopped before then.

The shot has worked wonders as far as no longer getting the monthly, but I do feel as my cramps have progressed

It’s great after your body is used to it. Feels invasive when you first get it because of the mood swings, weight gain, loss of sex drive (this is almost permanent for me) and cramps. But……. Worth it i guess #nomoreperiods

I think this is a great birth control method if you have absolutely 0 other options, but it DESTROYED my sex drive and made sex painful because I was no longer getting as much lubrication as I used to. I also gained a good bit of weight and retained a lot of water.

Personally this has not been a very good experience, even after over a year.

horrible mood swings, paranoia, depression and anxiety- my doctor told me that the depo shot would not affect my emotions like other birth controls i’ve been on previously. this is by far the worst. i gained weight, my hair is beginning to come out in clumps in the shower, my cramps are very painful. please do research and talk about the side effects with your doctor before considering.
