Altavera is a combined pill that contains a standard dose of estrogen and a progestin called levonorgestrel which is one of the safest progestins to take. It's a really good option to try when you first start out with birth control as it has a lower risk of blood clots while keeping all of the benefits of the combined pill. It comes in a 28 day pack with 21 active pills containing the hormones, followed by 7 placebo pills which are a different colour. You will usually have a withdrawal bleed while taking these inactive pills.

It has been incredibly effective with preventing pregnancy. As long as it is taken consistently. Weight gain and loss of sex drive started within the first 6 months of taking.
