Nextstellis is a combination birth control pill that contains a new type of estrogen, called estetrol, which has not been used in birt control before. Estetrol is body identical, meaning it the the same chemical as the estrogen our own body makes. Estetrol is combined with a newer type of progestogen, called drospirenone, which is in pills like Yasmin and Yaz . The estrogen in Nextstellis is 10 to 20 times less potent than the usual type of estrogen used in combination birth control pills, so researchers will monitor users closely over the next few years to see if this reduces the risk of side effects like blood clots. It's thought that the side effects and risks may be less than other estrogen containing combination pills, but we're waiting to see!
