Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 birth control pill FAQs

Spotting is also known as breakthrough bleeding and typically occurs in the first few months of taking the combination pill. So whilst it can be a pain and ruin a few pairs of pants - there's no need to worry. If you have been taking the combination pill for more than 3 months and your spotting is continuing, or you are experiencing new or irregular bleeding then contact your doctor or nurse for advice. You may be asked to do a pregnancy test or STI test and come in for an examination. As you get to the inactive pills (the last 7 which are often a different colour) in your Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 packet you will likely have a withdrawal bleed. This is similar to a period where the womb lining sheds in response to a drop in hormones. Some people may experience very light bleeding or no bleeding at all during these pills. The inactive pills can be skipped completely and you can keep taking the active pills to prevent bleeds. If you take the active birth control pills back to back you won't have a withdrawal bleed but may experience spotting or breakthrough bleeding. Find out more in our guide to continuous pill taking.

Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 is a combination pill that is taken daily to prevent pregnancy. It makes the fluid in your cervix thicker (which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb) whilst also stopping ovulation. The combined birth control pill also prevents the lining of your womb from thickening enough for a fertilised egg to implant into it. There are a few things that can stop the combination pill from working properly including vomiting, some antibiotics, or missing pills. Take a look at our complete guide to the combination pill to find out more.

You should take the Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 pill around the same time every day. We recommend keeping your pill packet somewhere you look at everyday (like next to your toothbrush) to remind you to take it, or set an alarm on your phone. Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 comes in packets of 21 active pills containing hormones followed by 7 inactive pills without hormones during which you'll experience a withdrawal bleed (like a period). If you want to skip bleeds for a holiday or just because...you can choose to shorten the days you take the inactive pills or miss it out altogether to prevent a bleed (check out our blog on taking your pill back to back). It's easiest to start your pill on a Sunday to keep track of the pills in the packet. If this is in the first 5 days of your period, you're protected from pregnancy straight away. Otherwise you need to make sure you use condoms or avoid sex for 7 days after starting the pill before you are protected. Coming off Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 is easy - you just stop taking it. When you do this you’re no longer protected from pregnancy. If you want to stop the pill but do not wish to become pregnant then you should complete your current packet before stopping and consider switching to another form of contraception before you stop taking your pill. If you have unprotected sex and stop your pill before the packet is finished you may ovulate (release an egg from the ovary) and could become pregnant. Read our complete guide to coming off the pill.
