Jolessa is an "extended use" birth control which means you can have less bleeds per year! Each packet contains 3 trays. Tray 1 and 2 contain 28 active pills in each which you take with no break in between. The final tray, number 3, contains 35 pills which are 28 active pills followed by 7 lower oestrogen pills during which you may have a bleed. This is a great way to reduce potential side effects that may occur in the placebo week with other birth control options and to reduce the number of bleeds per year.

Jolessa birth control pill FAQs

The Jolessa pill does improve acne for a number of users, but it's important to remember that it affects everyone differently so you aren't guaranteed a positive change. Taking the combination pill may also cause acne to worsen initially when you start taking it. Find out more in our guide to the birth control pill and acne.

There's no clear evidence that taking Jolessa will affect your weight. Weight gain, and loss, can be impacted by a number of factors that may be related to hormones and your menstrual cycle, like water retention, but more research needs to be done on this. Make sure to take a look at our users' reviews to see how our community reports Jolessa affects their weight. You can also take a look at our guide to birth control and weight to find out more.

There's no conclusive evidence to suggest that Jolessa causes depression or mood swings, but for some women, hormonal birth control may cause emotional side effects. You can find out more by checking out the reviews users of Jolessa have left at The Lowdown to see what changes they experienced to their mood. You can also find out more information on this topic in our guide to birth control and mood.

Jolessa is an extended use combination pill deisgned to reduce bleeds to one every 3 months. You take 84 days of active pills containing both progestin and estrogen followed by 7 days of placebo pills. During the placebo pills, you may have a withdrawal bleed. However, this isn't necessary so you could skip them and move straight onto more active pills in the next pack to avoid a bleed - this is completely safe! The downside of this extended use is spotting or breakthrough bleeding, but this tends to get better the longer you use Jolessa.

Jolessa is a combination pill that is taken daily to prevent pregnancy. It makes the fluid in your cervix thicker (which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb) whilst also stopping ovulation. The combination pill also prevents the lining of your womb from thickening enough for a fertilised egg to implant into it. There are a few things that can stop the combination pill from working properly including vomiting, some antibiotics, or missing pills. Take a look at our complete guide to the combination pill to find out more.

You should take the Jolessa pill around the same time every day. We recommend keeping your pill packet somewhere you look at everyday (like next to your toothbrush) to remind you to take it, or set an alarm on your phone. Jolessa comes in packets of 91 pills, the first 84 pills contain active hormones, followed by 7 inactive pills during which you may experience a withdrawal bleed (like a period). After finished the packet, go straight onto your next one. It's easiest to start your pill on a Sunday to keep track of the pills in the packet. If this is in the first 5 days of your period, you're protected from pregnancy straight away. Otherwise you need to make sure you use condoms or avoid sex for 7 days after starting the pill before you are protected. Coming off Jolessa is easy - you just stop taking it. When you do this you’re no longer protected from pregnancy. If you want to stop the pill but do not wish to become pregnant then you should complete your current packet before stopping and consider switching to another form of contraception before you stop taking your pill. If you have unprotected sex and stop your pill before the packet is finished you may ovulate (release an egg from the ovary) and could become pregnant. Read our complete guide to coming off the pill.
