This caused pain/vomiting/inability to sleep for 3 months after insertion. I was promised it would improve, and told to just keep giving it time. Severe menstrual cramps continued the whole 2 years that I had this. Doctors promised many times over the 2 years that my symptoms were normal and/or not due to the IUD(both incorrect). Around the 9 month mark I began to develop progesterone hypersensitivity autoimmune disease. This continued to progress until I removed it. This new condition landed me in the ER multiple times due to anaphylaxis: asthma, heart palpitations, high BP, frequent fainting, extreme rashes etc. I had to quit my job because I was not functional on any level. Luckily I eventually figured it out.

After expelling two Paragards, my doctor recommended Mirena. My body took to it much better overall, and I ended up keeping it for 6 years. I wish I knew my sex drive would decrease, I would get occasional horrible cramps from ovarian cysts, and it would dry me up leaving me susceptible to more yeast infections than usual. I loved the peace of mind and no periods during a time when I was growing my career. I don't think I would use it again, now that I'm married and a baby wouldn't be such a big deal.

After taking the pill for years for my endometriosis and PCOS, the hormonal IUD has been a much much better experience. I’ve had two problems with it — once it moved and stuck into me which was painful but had it removed and replaced same day, and once it gave me a big cyst which was eliminated with a hormone pill for a week. Both of these are still much more minor than the pain and problems I had with the pill!
