Amethyst birth control is an "extended use" type of combined contraception. It contains both estrogen and a progestin called levonorgestrel but at lower doses than found in other pills. The packets of Amethyst come with 28 pills and they all contain active hormones, without any placebo pills built in to cause a withdrawal bleed. This "extended use" of birth control can cause more irregular spotting and bleeding, but for the majority of women, this settles with time.
