What's the lowdown?

  • Don’t panic!

  • It’s happened to other people, you’re not alone

Can a tampon get stuck?

It is possible for a tampon to become stuck inside your vagina, however it is not possible to lose it… And hey if you’re reading this article because you have got a tampon stuck then don’t worry, you’re definitely not the only one and it is possible to get it back out.

Do I have a tampon stuck?

Your tampon can become stuck if you use a tampon incorrectly and break the string. If this has happened don’t worry, as it is still possible to get out.

The bodily signs that a tampon is stuck may include:

  • Pain – There may be pain when urinating or abdominal (tummy) pain
  • Discharge – May turn yellow, green, brown, pink or even grey as well as producing an offensive smell
  • Swelling – Your genital area may begin to swell, redden or itch
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • A high temperature or fever

How can I get a stuck tampon out?

  • Don’t panic…. Your muscles will only contract more & cause it to be more difficult to get it out.
  • Wash your hands first!!!
  • To try and bring the tampon closer to your vaginal opening, get into a comfortable position that leaves your vagina open i.e. a squat
  • Try and find the tampon string, this will be easier to pull the tampon out and they are made so they’re super hard to break(1)
  • If you can feel the tampon that’s great, but it still might be difficult getting it out
  • Insert your fingers slowly and try to get a grip on it
  • And simply pull it out
  • If you can’t pull it out, you can’t find it or you simply don’t want to then make sure you go and see a doctor as soon as possible because a tampon shouldn’t be inserted for more than 8 hours

*An extra tip would be to use a lubricant if you’re nervous as it will make the tampon easier to remove.

Will a stuck tampon come out by itself?

Yes, a stuck tampon will eventually come out. However, you should seek medical attention if it’s been stuck for more than 8 hours as there’s a risk of toxic shock syndrome.
If you’re now completely put off by tampons then there are plenty of other period products you can use!
