Awful removal - lots of scar tissue had formed around my implant and the nurses and doctors found it very hard to remove. The implant had ached in my arm the entire 4.5 years I had it (I couldn't have it take out as soon as it expired due to COVID-19). I didn't notice side effects until I had it removed. I've had it removed (and no other contraceptive methods aside from condoms) for 4 months now and have noticed: heavier periods with a much shorter break in between bleeds than I used to get, hair thinning and loss, gained weight, vaginal dryness, and decreased pleasure during sexual activities.
