I was excited to try Mirena, having heard lots of things anecdotally and having limited options due to migraines. However, I truly hated the whole experience. Insertion was painful but ok (cramps, bleeding for two weeks after), but also gave me thrush and BV for the first time ever. Following this I had ongoing abdominal and vaginal pain, multiple bouts of cystitis, recurring thrush and vaginal dryness. My sex drive has also diminished - I don't know if it's because of all the pain, thrush etc, or the actual hormonal effects, but either way obviously defeats the point of contraception. My periods are a lot lighter, but now last 7 days instead of 4. They are also so light that I can't use tampons, and have to use pads, which I personally really dislike. The cramps are also just as bad if not worse than without the coil. I have also felt like my mood has been far more dramatic recently, prone to tears or anger, when I previously wasn't, but again I don't know if this is the hormonal effect or the stress of the whole experience. I've had it taken out today, which was mercifully pretty straightforward, so I'm hoping it all goes back to normal. The nurse did think the thrush/BV was triggered by the coil and was hopeful it would be resolved when my body has resettled. I have friends who love the coil and swear by it, it just absolutely did not agree with me, and I had no idea what I was getting into.
