Sadly very negative. The abnormal bleed meant I needed a scan, then an MRI which I found traumatic as I’m claustrophobic, then - because my fibroids meant they still couldn’t check my womb lining - a hysteroscopy. I have had one of these in outpatients before and it was extremely painful and traumatic so I had this hysteroscopy (after some unnecessary wrangling which delayed the protocol) under a general anaesthetic. I had initially told my GP if there was even a tiny risk of a bleed - as I am aware fibroids were fed by oestrogen - I would not take HRT. She insisted she had checked with a private ‘expert’ and that I would be ok. If I had known the repercussions - after telling her of my bleed within only a couple of months of starting HRT I was on the cancer fast-track route which was terrifying - I would never have taken it. This was also at the time when the NHS had run out of the HRT I was using and the alternatives had run out too. I had experienced an easing of anxiety on HRT pretty quickly but this situation, then the bleed, meant it escalated again and I came off. My GP gave little help on how to wean myself off and no follow-up advice or alternatives. So although there is probably a combination out there that would work for me I am not on it - it is a national scandal that women are being forced to go private to get the correction information and doses. Since that experience I have been asked several times if I have private healthcare, or been fobbed off with the number of a local private HRT specialist. The menopause affects half the population yet it’s pot luck whether your GP is at all interested in helping / has any useful or up to date knowledge. Why should women have to pay to get the advice and treatment they need? I have given up as I do not trust a GP to give me accurate advice and cannot afford to go private.

I started with a patch but it kept falling of due to lots of exercise. Moved to a tablet for a while before my doctor recently gel and utrogesteran. Started on oestrogel but changed to samdrena due to problems with supply and symptoms returning when packaging was changed. Happy on the samdrena. Did have some bleeding and after investigating I needed to increase progesterone which seems to be ok. Have a few occasional symptoms one of which is some sore joints/muscle pulls and do seem to pick up lots of small problems - ear infection, cough, cold etc.

Initially on 50 patch evorel and noticed slight improvements which started to stop after 6 months . My dose upped to 75 and I'm starting to feel a bit more like me

Overall positive experience. Have within the last 3 months increased to 3 pumps (2 morning, 1 evening) due to joint/muscular discomfort and yet to see if this improves things. I suffer with VA and 1%estriol cream has been a lifesaver, paired with vaginal moisturiser. I constantly felt like I needed to wee and suffer from vaginal dryness and vagifem was no longer effective. I do get bloated and I have gained weight but don’t know if that’s related to hrt or just the way my body balance has changed. I am working on nutrition and cut down on processed foods.

My experience has overall good, I did think that once on hrt and testosterone, I’d get my sex drive back. That’s not really happened. Every other symptom has gotten better. So I’m thankful for that. Life is so much better now, happy home again.

I’m very happy with my HRT, it’s easy to apply and makes a massive difference to my health and wellbeing and managing this stage of my life and I know it has potential health benefits too

Feeling more positive since taking HRT and less irritable / rage which was quite severe before. I did experience headaches and diarrhoea in the first week or so or starting but settled down after that. I'm keeping an eye on my weight but doesn't seem to have shifted much.

Good, but I had to pay nearly £700 for it.

It took a while to get on the right regime at the right dose, but now things are fairly stable. It is just the side effects that are not so much fun

I did gain weight, but I don't think that's due to the HRT. The bleeding was due to changing from the mirena coil to utrogestan which didn't agree with me - it cause reflux, mood changes and nausea. I now have a new mirena coil and am very happy.

It took a while to get dosage correct. 100ug too much, 75ug not quite enough. Patches preferred to gel, although I do sometimes use gel to top up. I dont think my current symptoms are due to hrt or side effects. I did come off hrt for a few weeks at request of gynae and peri menopause symptoms returned with a vengeance.: joint pain is the worst. Headaches, itching, cramps, hair loss all improved with hrt. Still get tinnitus on occasion for no apparent reason.

Changed from combined patch due to extreme low mood when progesterone was introduced Changed from oestrogen patch to gel due to skin reaction to glue Much better on current regimen.

Was so tired on the first tablet I took that I thought I’d been drugged. Then felt sick on the next one. Trying the third now

Was on combined patch for 18mths and change was instant. Slowly some symptoms creeped back in so on continue only and stated great but 4 myths in suddenly been hit with acne, appetite increase and brain fog again. Asking for another review. On 50 dose

HRT has been a lifesaver for me. I can’t say anything else really. I was on the brink and it brought me back.

Positive overall. It took a few adjustments to get the right prescription for me but happy with how I am feeling now. I had to get the testosterone privately as my gp wouldn’t prescribe.

HRT does seem to have settled well. I am going to enquire on the unscheduled bleeding whilst on the progesterone tablets. Sex drive is still extremely low so will enquire on testosterone

I noticed improvement when changing from estrogen 50 to 75. I finally felt like myself again. I still have ups and downs, but at least it's just a few nights or at most a week of waking up at 3am instead of every night continuously. Frequent UTIs and vaginal dryness were resolved on estrogen 50 dose, but needed the extra 25 for major improvement in sleep and anxiety issues. Also, the natural progesterone (utrogestan) was key for me. Combined estrogen and synthetic progestin patches made my acne so much worse and did not help my sleep or anxiety much. Acne is gone with utrogestan/estrogen combo. If you have bleeding issues on the utrogestan, it should resolve in a few months if you stick with it, or you can take the mini pill continuously with HRT at the same time according to NIH guidance to stop the bleeding altogether.
